Can chiropractors help with ankle and foot pain?

While chiropractors do focus on the spine, many are trained in adjusting the extremities (arms and legs) as well as the TMJ joint in your jaw. Anywhere two bones meet is a joint that can potentially go out of alignment and need to be adjusted.

There are amazingly twenty six bones in the foot, each and every one capable of causing foot pain! In between are even more joints which can be a source of pain. The cuboid bone alone has six different bones, all with a joint. Specialized care and high quality orthotics can help greatly.

The ankle is a fairly simple joint and patients respond well to the typical chiropractic ankle adjustment and treatment. The relief can be immediate, even for stubborn heel pain or ball of foot pain (and even toe pain!).

Common Foot Problems

There are three common reasons for foot pain. Let’s take a closer look at them.

Fallen arches: Often referred to as flat feet, this is a condition that many people have but do not realize can be fixed. Fallen arches don’t just affect your feet. The root causes is tendons that aren’t pulling the foot muscles together like they were designed to, forcing the foot and ankle to roll inward. This eventually adds pressure to the knees, femur, pelvis, and hips which can lead to chronic pain.

Morton’s neuroma: Neuroma just means there’s a ball under your skin or swollen nerve in the ball of the foot. It is caused by the toes being repeatedly squished together.

Plantar fasciitis: This foot ailment is the irritation of the plantar fascia ligament caused by continuous strain. It often leads to pain in the heel. The plantar fascia ligament runs the length of your foot, connecting the toes to the heal. This can sometimes be confused with heel spurs.

How Chiropractic Helps

If you read the above section and one of those common foot pain symptoms sounds like yours, chiropractic can help. Sometimes the solution for foot pain, ankle pain and even stubborn back pain is simply a matter of putting bones back in their proper location to find fast relief.

When bones get out of alignment, they pull muscles with them, which can also crush nerves.

That’s where your pain comes from. Your local chiropractor can help you get back to the life you deserve pain free.
